ABOUT ME

My name is Renée Mauger (pronounced ‘Major’; she/her). I have completed the MAPP (Masters of Applied Positive Psychology), a certificate in counselling, and an undergraduate degree in psychology. I am a certified yoga and meditation teacher, and I was formerly a lawyer. I have also been a stay-at-home peaceful parent for many years.

I bring all these qualifications and experiences to my coaching, providing you with a professional and goal-oriented, yet supportive and compassionate parent coaching experience.

  • While I was at the University of Melbourne studying law and psychology, I discovered yoga and meditation, and these disciplines changed my life. Before beginning work as a lawyer, I spent a gap year travelling overseas on my own, which included six incredible months in India, studying various forms of yoga, Buddhist philosophy, and meditation.

I then returned home where I worked at a top-tier Melbourne law firm, refining my abilities to apply the law to factual situations and weighing up the best solutions to advise clients. Yoga and meditation were the self-care practices I drew upon to support me while practising as a lawyer.

After exploring meditation from the late 1990s, I wished to establish a daily practice. In 2001, I committed to this goal and I have meditated every day since. My practice keeps me grounded and helps me to be the person and parent I want to be.

My passion for yoga and meditation saw me returning to India in 2002, where I completed my yoga teacher training certification at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Ashram. This consolidated my prior experience and training, and gave me the qualification and confidence to teach. I taught yoga, meditation and relaxation practices to a diverse range of students at various yoga studios, corporations and law firms.

Also in 2002, I completed a certificate of counselling with the Cairnmillar Institute in Melbourne, which provided me with valuable listening and counselling skills.

From 2004 until 2007, I was an Investigations Officer at the then Psychologists Registration Board of Victoria (now AHPRA). I combined this work with yoga teaching. My role at the Board was a legal and ethical one, where I was responsible for investigating complaints against registered psychologists in relation to their professional conduct.

In 2007, I recorded a guided meditation album which is available as a digital download via multiple streaming services. Please see my resources page for a free link.

In 2008, I became a mother - which has proved to be my greatest impetus yet to grow and learn. Straight away, I just knew that it didn’t make sense to punish a child, especially for not meeting expectations beyond their developmental stage. I felt so strongly that a child deserves the respect and encouragement to develop mastery that any other human deserves. Unfortunately, I found it difficult to find parenting resources which complemented how I wanted to parent.

Then, thankfully early on in my journey as a mother, I found Dr Laura Markham. Her approach made so much sense to me. As soon as they became available, I read Dr Laura’s books and eagerly enrolled in her 12-week online course, which I repeated over and over again, soaking up the ideas, skills, wisdom and support. I was so grateful to have found a research-based parenting model which resonated so deeply with my beliefs about parenting. I committed myself to being a peaceful parent and have used the tools consistently since, repeatedly referring back to the Peaceful Parent Happy Kids website and Dr Laura’s other resources when new developmental stages or challenges arose.

In 2017-2018, I completed a Masters of Applied Positive Psychology (the MAPP) at the University of Melbourne, achieving first class honours. During the course, I relished the chance to explore the research and theoretical underpinnings of the various components which make up the peaceful parenting model. This only served to reinforce my belief in and commitment to this type of parenting.

Having practical, first-hand experience of the everyday impacts of peaceful parenting, as well as having studied the research behind the components which make up this parenting framework, I was so excited to have the opportunity learn directly from Dr Laura Markham in an intensive nine-month training program and become a Certified Peaceful Parent Coach and Educator in 2022. Based in Melbourne, Australia, I am honoured to be the first peaceful parenting coach in the Asia-Pacific region.

I am a member of the Open Heart Coaches Mentoring program where I engage in routine professional peer supervision and continue my professional development.

Friends, colleagues and family say that I am organised, practical, professional, empathetic and warm. It is so gratifying that this role of parent coach brings together and draws upon all of my qualifications and experience. I look forward to sharing it with you in a safe space where you can be listened to and receive the advice, guidance and support that you seek.
